Hometown:Kingston Springs, Tenn.  Born in Utah, graduated in 2001 from Lone Peak High School  and former Highland, Tenn resident.

Senior Airman Newman had many interests, including break dancing, ultimate Frisbee,  working out and his Christian faith, recalls his friend Eric Benbrooks who worked with him while he was assigned to the EOD team in Hawaii for three years.  "He was always asking questions, wanting to learn more about the job," Benbrooks said. "He tried to put as much of himself into the job as he could, giving his all every day." Also relating that he heard about his friend's death through the grapevine, when other former members of the EOD team contacted each other.

“He was a strong-headed, incredible guy who he heard about his friend's death through the grapevine, when other former members of the EOD team contacted each other.always thought of others before himself, and died trying to change the world,” said his sister, Emily Swaggerty. "He died as noble a death I think that he wanted to". "And he was so proud to be doing what he was doing. And I am proud of him. I just wish that he wouldn't have died doing it."

The introduction on his online MySpace profile is: "My name is Will,"  "I serve my God, my country and my family."

His wife, Soyong Newman last spoke to him at noon the day before he was killed. He had passed his college-level equivalence test for an associate degree and “was so excited,” she said. Adding, “I would tell him now: ‘You’re a hero, my hero always,’ ”.

Senior Airman William N. Newman is survived by his father and stepmother, Matt and Angela Newman, his wife Soyong, and brothers and sisters, Elizabeth, Emily, Janet, Jeff, Joey, Crystal and in-laws Josh and Matt.

I was the English Speaking Pastor at Will and Soyoung’s church in Honolulu before He was sent to Iraq and I moved to South Korea. I had the great pleasure of having Will in my weekly Bible study and I am glad to have known him not only as a Christian brother but also as a friend.

Truthfully, the news of his death hit me pretty hard. There have been many emotions in my heart regarding the circumstances of his death as well as ill feeling towards the people responsible. But one thing has given me comfort. That is the knowledge that Will loved God and had a personal relationship with Jesus. My intention is not to preach a sermon but to let you all know that according to his Christian faith, Will had assurance of salvation and entrance into heaven. As his Pastor for a time, I was a witness to his faith and I can assure you that it was a very important part of his life. Although it is still difficult, it brings me peace and I hope that it also will bring you peace, to know that Will is now in the presence of the Lord. Please rest assured in this fact.

I consider it an honor to have known Will Newman. Please keep his wife Soyoung and family in your prayers.

With great sincerity,
Pastor Gabe Segoine.
