Assigned to Tactical Law Enforcement Team South Detachment 403, aboard the patrol coastal Firebolt, forward deployed to Manama, Bahrain

Joined the Coast Guard when he was 18 and served in Long Island and Washington State before joining Tactical Law Enforcement Team South, known as TACLET South, at Coast Guard Air Station Miami.

First deployed to Iraq from February to May 2003 and was on his second tour.  Was a six-year Coast Guard veteran.

  Killed 24 April 04 when suicide bombers in boats attacked pumping stations in the Persian Gulf. Bruckenthal became the first member of the Coast Guard to die in battle since the Vietnam war.

Awards: Bronze Star with Valor, the Purple Heart and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.

Hometown: Smithtown, N.Y, Born in Stony Brook, New York  but was A Long Island native, Bruckenthal grew up in Hawaii, Virginia and Connecticut.  Graduated from Herndon High  School also played football for Ridgefield High School during his teenage years and served on the town's volunteer fire department. He left in 1995 after his sophomore year.

He was also a reserve police officer, continued as a volunteer firefighter,  emergency medical services responder, and a high school assistant football coach.

"Nate gave unconditionally and that is why he was so loved in this community," says Neah Bay Police Chief T.J. Greene, "he did so much for our police department" and everyone knew of him.

Ed Gabbianelli, chief of the volunteer fire department, recalled him as a very polite and responsible teenager. "He'd just jump right in with everybody," Gabbianelli said. "If we got a call to go to a fire, he was right there."

“He was honored to do anything the Coast Guard asked him,” said Daniel Burgoyne, a friend and fellow petty officer. “He was a true patriot and he loved serving his country.” "When we were on deployments he would always tell stories about the dumbest things," he said. "It was always good to have him around. You always could count on him for a laugh."

"He was a very fun-loving boy," says his father, Ric Bruckenthal,  "He was always a happy child and he turned into a happy young adult. We're very proud of what Nathan did."

Petty Officer Bruckenthal had been married two years, but missed both anniversaries because he was in Iraq. His wife, Pattie, was three months pregnant with their first child at the time. Family members recall that he was excited about his impending fatherhood, and he loved his wife. "He would never go anywhere without her,"  said Burgoyne.

Petty Officer Bruckenthal is survived by his wife; Patti his father, Eric; mother, Laurie Bullock; and sister, NoaBeth.

Cain, Colleen
Lieutenant

Lieutenant Colleen A. Cain became the USCG' s third female aviator and the first female helicopter (HH-52A) pilot in June 1979.

On 7 January 1982 she perished during a search mission when the helicopter she was co-piloting responded to a distress call from a fishing vessel in stormy weather.  She was the First USCG woman killed in the line of duty--helicopter accident on a rescue mission. Flew several rescue missions and completed her qualifications as Co-pilot, First Pilot, and Aircraft Commander.

Awards: Coast Guard Achievement Medal

Hometown: Born in Waverly, Iowa
 
A fellow Coast Guard officer wrote of Lt. Cain's reputation among her peers: "Without fail, they regarded her as an exemplary Coast Guard officer, patriot, and human being. "Lieutenant Cain and her fellow crewmembers made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their nation and fellow countrymen, striving to protect life at sea.
 
 
On 25 October 1985, the Coast Guard dedicated Cain Hall, a 100-room residence hall at Reserve Training Center Yorktown, Virginia, to her memory.

Johnson, Horton W.
Commander

Killed 7 Jan 82 while  responding to a distress call from the Pan Am, a 74-foot fishing boat that was taking on water off Maui and was in danger of sinking. Nine hours later, another helicopter discovered the wreckage on a steep ridge in Moloka'i's Wailau Valley.
